Whilst most places are currently on lockdown with the current virus that everyones focus is on. Stoners around the world have been looking forward to one thing, and one thing only as this year it just isn’t one day off it its the only ever time is a whole month. For most smokers around the world they are aware off the term “420” but many aren’t aware off where it has came from and how the term has crossed the world. Read more to find out the story behind 420.
Where it all started
To this date, there are hundred off different stories going around for the reason why it is labelled 420. I have personally heard many in my time from it was hitlers birthday too it’s what police code if they know someone is smoking cannabis, and everything in between. This story below is without a doubt the most popular as first it has been around for decades and also the original group are around to this date and promote the story on many different platforms.
They do have proof off this story compared to some off the crazy stories out there however, they used the term in the early ‘70s in the form of an old 420 flag and numerous letters with 420 references and early ‘70s post marks. They also have a story.
In 1971, a group off students heard about a cannabis plant that an owner couldn’t keep up and didn’t have the time to care for it. The story is a group off students managed to get there hands on a map that would take them there, supposedly from the original owners himself. They would all meet at Louis Pasteur statue outside their high school at least once a week conduct a search. Their meeting time? 4:20 p.m, after practice. They would pile into a car, smoke some pot and scour the nearby Point Reyes Forest for the elusive, free herb.Unfortunately the weed plant was never stumbled upon, but the term “420” has stayed about since then.
Today, the unofficial holiday is celebrated worldwide. Officials at the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of California, Santa Cruz two colleges that boast of having the biggest smoke-outs attempted to push back on the growing popularity of the festivities among their students in 2009. They encouraged (or pleaded with) their students to not participate—to no avail.
Somehow because off all this stoners around the world, people will smoke as much as they can on this one day off the year. April the 20th or even light up every day at 4:20 am or pm if they can.
For the places around the world that don’t allow cannabis for medical or recreational use somehow still get away with it in most places. In London for example people will go to Hyde park a very popular park, and just smoke with a very large amount off people, the interesting thing is the police just watch this happen. Why? maybe because off the amount off stoners there are it just isn’t worth the hassle for the police. But only on this one day off the year the police will allow it to slide. This has been happening for centuries now, a lot off arrests are made on the day but are usually for worse cases then smoking a bit off weed
Obviously this year is different it is still a few weeks away, but the way it is looking with this current COVID-19 virus there won’t be any social gatherings at all let alone allowing people to smoke cannabis in public. So this time round will be slightly different but it will never change the excitement that a stoner has throughout the April month. It is looked at like christmas for your average joe that likes a blaze.
So there is it the story behind 420 and how it isn’t just a phrase it is a day celebrated by millions. For more Haze11 Content check it out here.
